Almost two centuries ago, in 1812, William Westley Richards opened his gunmaking shop in Birmingham, England, in the city’s center. In 1896 the shop relocated to Bournbrook, on the outskirts of “Brum.” In 2008 the shop moved again—returning downtown, to a refurbished factory on Pritchett Street.
The new facilities are a showpiece of the gunmaker’s art. From the front room to the workshops to the on-site tannery and range, the factory is made to be visited—a destination for those who appreciate fine craft.

Managing Director Simon Clode (opposite)has seen to every detail, his fingerprints evident throughout. Passions for shooting and hunting have taken form in a living museum of sorts. A testament to quality and tradition.

In the well-lighted workshops the craftsmen ply their trade. Investing hours of handwork to shape metal and wood and to embellish some of the finest firearms in the world.

Like this trio of Deluxe  round-action 12-bore sidelock ejectors.

Examples of new and old are found throughout (from top): a round-action 20-bore sidelock ejector with traditional rose & scroll engraving, two pairs of Westley Richards pocket pistols, a Deluxe sideplated droplock double rifle in .600 Nitro Express.

Two Deluxe rifles: a droplock double in .577 NE (right) and a take-down bolt-action in .416 Rigby.

A pillar of British gunmaking alive and well in Birmingham.
