The Paper Trail Leads to RST

 Clear

Cartridges at the Classic Shotshell Co. have just become more "classic." This spring the Pennsylvania-based manufacturer-which sells its American-made shotshells under the RST, Ltd., banner-has introduced a full range of traditional paper-case shells in 12, 16 and 20 gauge. Classic Shotshell/RST is best known for its low-pressure, low-recoil shells designed for vintage and lightweight doubles. According to Director Morris Baker, ballistic tests show new RST paper-case shells develop "the same velocities at substantially less pressures than our plastic-hull cartridges"-a recipe sure to please fans of RST's double-gun-friendly loads.

New paper-case shells will include 12-gauge loads in 2", 21/4", 21/2" and 23/4" lengths; 16-gauge loads in 21/2", and 20-gauge loads in 21/2". Where possible, the paper-case shells will have fiber wads for the ultimate in tradition. Baker said the new paper-case shells will complement rather than supplant RST's standard line of plastic-hull shells, the latter being available in a wide variety of loads, including short-hulled 10-gauge loads. Also new at RST are loadings in American No. 7 shot, ballistically filling a gap between No. 6 and No. 71/2 shot. "We experimented last season with several No. 7 loads, which proved to be marvelous for early season pheasants and late-season grouse," Baker said. "Their effectiveness was a surprise, even to us." From time to time in '07 RST also will offer special runs of copper-plated shot in sizes from BB to No. 71/2.
