Crazy Huns

In the shadow of the Crazies with Montana Bird Hunts.

In Montana the valley of the Yellowstone is famous for its wind. If a storm system comes within 500 miles, it can blow along the river. And it's real wind. When it hits, there are not just a few "bar-early" fly-fishers walking into the saloon without a hat. The state is also known for its many isolated mountain ranges. One of them, the oft-voted "most scenic" Crazy Mountains, near Big Timber, serves to funnel the infamous wind with its 11,000-foot massif wall. Which is exactly why the covey of Huns that Dennis Kavanagh's big setter, Buzz, had so carefully pinned in the shadow of those mountains blew out in less time than it takes to say, "Scree-bite!" A lean 50-ish Kavanagh strides a five-mile morning hunt in the foothills almost every day and arrives fresh at the truck at noontime to put out lawn chairs, sandwich fixings and cookies with an Irish twinkle in his eye.
