Major Nathaniel Peabody (USA, ret.) was not in his apartment. He hadn't been there for three days. He was out hunting somewhere. I knew I'd soon learn where. It was nearing the end of the month, and he'd surely make contact and advise me where I should deliver his monthly Spendthrift Trust remittance. So I sat in my office at the Smythe, Hauser, Engels & Taucher law firm and waited. The intercom buzzed. I picked up the phone and heard: "I'm at Broken Back. Bring Upmann and Macallan. Friday. Evergreen.
