Ducks at Beaver Dam, quail at Fitch Farms
By John Taylor
It was a gray wildfowlers' dawn, that wonderful time when all remains cloaked in near darkness, punctuated by the occasional mee-yamp of a startled gadwall and the saucy quacking of a hen mallard. This, however, was no ordinary dawn; it was dawn at Beaver Dam Lake . . . Nash Buckingham's Beaver Dam Lake. The Beaver Dam that was the setting of many of Buckingham's duck hunting tales and where he shot his last duck at age 88.
I had come to Mississippi as the guest of Mississippi's Dept. of Tourism and Tunica County's Convention and Visitors Bureau to not only hunt at hallowed Beaver Dam but also to taste traditional Southern quail hunting at Fitch Farms, in nearby Holly Springs.
