It is unfortunate for the "special relationship" that Britain and America are presumed to speak the same language. Everyone from Oscar Wilde to Winston Churchill has observed that the two countries are separated by a common tongue; inevitable really, as English has evolved differently in both places. The difference of outlook might best be sought in the famous aphorism: "In England a hundred miles is a long way. In America a hundred years is a long time." Peculiarities of history, custom and tradition are inevitably reflected in language, which in turn can lead to misunderstandings.
