Farming for Pheasants
At E Circle E Hunting Farms, it's all about the habitat
By Chad Mason
Sometimes pheasant hunting is a purely athletic contest.
That thought occurred to me while I alternated between a fast walk and a shuffling jog through tall wheatgrass and several inches of crusted snow. Despite the sub-freezing temperature and 20-mph wind, I felt warm inside and could feel my pulse pounding at the band of my wool hat. I'm an avid runner, but these South Dakota pheasants were proving more avid than I.
Several dozen birds already had flushed 100 yards ahead of the dog. They'd taken off on a low angle, the way pheasants do when they have a good running start, but a twirling Labrador tail kept pulling me onward.
