Read the Warning Signs
It was fall in Michigan. The ruffed grouse season was in full swing, and two German wirehairs had performed brilliantly during the day's hunt. The evening meal (grouse, of course) was finished, the dishes were washed and libations had appeared. Major Nathaniel Peabody (USA, ret.), Doc Carmichael, two Yoopers and a Troll were committing poker. (For the uninitiated, a Yooper is one who lives in the UP-the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. A person who lives in Lower Michigan-"beneath" the bridge that connects the UP with Lower Michigan-is called a Troll.
