Hunting Dogs
Knowing Your Dog
Good teachers understand how their pupils learn, and that's certainly true when the teacher is a bird hunter and the student a bird dog. To develop a confident and enthusiastic hunting partner-a dog that is in control and has stellar manners around game-a trainer needs to understand dog talk. Effective trainers must know what a dog is and what it is not. A good hunting dog is a predator. If the dog does not have a strong genetic desire to quest, it will lack the motivation to seek game. At the other end of the spectrum, with a dog that is not biddable but instead hard-wired to hunt, the trainer will have an uphill battle to stay in control and achieve consistent response to commands.
