SCI Supports Cape Cod Hunting Program

Supporters of a hunting program for Cape Cod National Seashore gain ground.

(Posted 9/12/07)

In comments filed last week, SCI generally supported the Hunting Program for Cape Cod National Seashore. In particular, SCI supports the Park Service's decision to reinstate pheasant hunting, banned since a 2003 court case, but opposed the Service's decision to phase out the popular hunt in no more than 17 years. Instead, SCI advocates that the Service continue the hunt as long as strong interest remains with local hunters and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, which administers the hunt. While SCI certainly supports plans for increased opportunities to hunt native quail and turkey, these opportunities should not come at the expense of the pheasant hunt. SCI expects the Park Service to make its final decision sometime soon.
