Gold for a 'No-Name' Gun

The Gold Medal Concours d'Elegance of Fine Guns features shotguns and rifles-new and old, from around the world-that are panel-judged in a variety of classes and categories.

It began with a call from a friend-the kind of friend who works overtime finding guns he thinks you should buy and then, if they turn out to be good deals, whines because you bought them and he didn't. The subject of one such call was an alleged Belgian "guild gun," a 16-gauge side-by-side with Damascus barrels. This is not something that normally speeds the heartbeat of fine-gun collectors but, based on the caller's description-and the attractive asking price -the gun was purchased sight unseen. The whining began almost immediately.

I read this article with enthusiasm because I thought I finally found the match to one of my Dad's beautiful guns we had inerited about 25 years ago from my Uncle. I brought the article all the way home to show him only to find out that he sold this particluar gun some time ago. I think it is the gun in your article. I had made some rubbings of the proof and manufacturing marks, but I don't have those now. I tried for sometime to find the manufactuer but was only able to find that the proof marks were from Belgium. From what I remember, the words Brevette (or Brevete), 70mm were stamped on the barrel flats and a squigly proof mark that resembles the brwoning buck logo. The stock was beautiful burl with very good dimensions (like 1 3/8 drop at comb, 2 1/4 drop at heel and around a 14"lop. I remember becasue it fit me perfectly, not much more than 6 1/2 lbs.

I am interested to try and buy it back, do you know the current owner? I can be reached at tifinieandsean@yahoo.com.
