Letting It Shine

A gun dealer once gave me a lovely metaphor about refinishing. "If I buy an old gun that's essentially beautiful," he said, "but one that's been knocked around more than good use would have, I don't hesitate to have it cleaned up. Look at it this way: If you met a beautiful woman who's maybe a bit worse for wear, wouldn't you at least buy her a new dress?" Once I finished choking on my drink and tamped down the giggles that followed, I had to agree. Yes, I would buy her a new dress, without a moment's hesitation.
