Guns of the Concours
An American Drilling for a Statesman
The Gold Medal Concours d'Elegance of Fine Guns features shotguns and rifles -new and old, from around the world-that are panel-judged in a variety of classes and categories. Germanic gunmakers called them "Drillings," meaning triplets, but one American gunmaker called his simply "the three barrel gun." The origins of Drill-ings date to the 1500s. One rifled and two smoothbore barrels do make a versatile combination gun. Some say they were meant for hunters who could only afford one gun or were allowed to own only one by law; others claim they were developed for hunting feathered and furred game simultaneously.
