The Major
A Bear Story
It was October. Six grouse hunters were sharing a cabin near a small stream deep in a sparsely populated area of Michigan's Upper Peninsula-the "UP." Five of the men were from the UP. That accounted for their generic designation of "UP-ers" (or "Yoopers"). The sixth hunter was Major Nathaniel Pea-body (USA, ret.). The men were friends of long standing. Each fall when the leaves on the hardwoods would turn earth-colored, they would meet in the Upper Peninsula to hunt grouse and woodcock. Their relationship was such that Pea-body had been officially designated an Honorary Yooper, a title seldom granted to outsiders.
