The Perfect Bird Dog
In pursuit of greatness - and beyond
By Tred Slough
In his classic collection of dog stories, Tears & Laughter, Gene Hill responded to the question "What makes a grouse dog great?" His reply, "At most hunting camps it's Jack Daniels or Wild Turkey," was vintage Hill-amusing, quick and true.
Now I'm not much of a bourbon guy; a short glass to keep a beer company is usually plenty for me. And I never had the honor of meeting Mr. Hill, but I sure wish I had. His stories have entertained me and comforted me in turn. On more than one occasion they have given me reason to pause and think as well.
