Gunfitting & Tale-Telling

Here are reports on two books about the complex, arcane subject of gunfitting plus a thoughtful, entertaining and often-amusing collection of bird hunting tales. The Orvis Guide to Gunfitting By Tom Deck (Lyons Press, 800-243-0495, www.lyonspress.com; 2006) 164 pp. $24.95. Tom Deck, a shooting instructor with the Vermont-based Orvis Co. for more than a decade, writes that he has conducted "hundreds if not thousands of [shotgun] fittings." He operates under the premise that "a properly fit shotgun can be wielded with deadly accuracy.
