Proof in the Pudding

I enjoy questions from readers. I can't respond to all of them, because there are only so many hours in a day and I have a longtime habit of spending some of them sleeping, eating, reading or just kicked back with my wife. But some questions intrigue me; they give me a sense of where some readers' interests lie and thus suggest story ideas. Not long ago, Jim Stuart of Virginia wrote about a stamp on a gun he owns. Mr. Stuart owns a Lefever Nitro Special that bears the legend "PROOF TESTED," and he wondered what it meant.
