Fine Gunmaking
Metal Finishes for Fine Guns, Part I
It may surprise you to learn that the last custom gun I completed was a Marlin Model 1894 lever-action rifle. The project was commissioned to replicate "best"-quality American riflemaking of the 1900s, the same era that witnessed the birth of best-quality cartridge gunmaking worldwide. During the finishing process, I was struck by the fact that the techniques and processes of the metal finishes mirrored those used on quality double shotguns. This got me thinking about how and why contemporary gunmakers use the polishing techniques and metal finishes we employ and what my decades in the trade have taught me about the utility, durability and longevity of metal finishes for fine guns.
