Book Review

From Texas to the .410

This time I'll report on two handsome coffee-table books, a literary cookbook and an in-depth look at the .410 shotgun. Wildlife on the King Ranch By Caroline Forgason & Paul Genho, editors, and Tom Urban, photographer (King Ranch, 800-282-5464; www.krsaddleshop.com; 2003) 200 pp. $54.45 postpaid. The King Ranch takes in 825,000 acres of Southeastern Texas. The historic spread is used mainly for cattle grazing and wildlife recreation, including hunting. Some biologists refer to the ranch as "the Last Great Habitat," because it forms an unbroken stretch of land supporting a tremendous variety of plants and animals, from tree-perching bromeliad plants to prickly pear cactus, from diamondback rattlesnakes to roseate spoonbills to trophy-sized whitetail deer.
