The "Yooper" Side-by-Side Classic

It may not be the biggest among side-by-side shooting events, but it's one of the most beloved among participants. The Upper Peninsula Side-by-Side Classic is the shoot that people talk about long after their black-fly bites have healed, perhaps because it is so totally isolated that everyone who's attended has been surprised to find such camaraderie and high-quality guns so far "out there," 25 miles north of Iron Mountain, Michigan.

One does not wander out accidentally among the "Yoopers;" you have to want to visit if you are going to trek to Michigan's barely contiguous landmass. And each June The UP Classic draws scores of shooters who want to go for "a two-day celebration of the pleasures of handling, seeing and shooting fine side-by-side double guns." Whether it's the unique competition, the wild surroundings, the prestigious fine-gun exhibitors or the stunning prizes, more than half of the 120 competitors' spots were claimed nearly four months out.

The combination of shooting events itself makes for a unique competition. Over the two days, each shooter is presented 226 targets-120 sporting clays; a 76-target, 21/2-minute "flushed quail" flurry; and a 30-target "pigeon" ring. Although the combined score is the basis of the competition, the hosts stress that "this event is not all about winning or losing;" it's supposed to be fun, and it's truly intended to celebrate the guns, the company and the style of the shooters. Toward that end, the grand prize-a very nice Arrieta from Wingshooting Adventures-is awarded by random drawing, and Lewis Class awards form the basis of handicapping. In fact, most years several very nice guns are awarded along with other prizes.

This year the Sagola Township Sportsman's Club will host the event on June 18 & 19 at its large log lodge. Breakfast and a Saturday-night banquet dinner are provided for competitors, and lunch is available.
