I arrived at the apartment of Major Nathaniel Peabody (USA, ret.) at 5:30 on a somber Monday afternoon in October. During the day I had tried to busy myself by drafting the terms of a particularly intricate trust dealing with an elderly donor; a new, young third wife; and two sets of unhappy children from the previous marriages. I say "I had tried to busy myself," because it had been difficult to concentrate. I'd been worried. Peabody was supposed to have returned from a Wisconsin hunting trip late Sunday evening.
