Last year spring came early to the rugged valley at the edge of the Italian Alps. From the porch of the I Due Roccoli inn overlooking Lake Iseo, I could see the young couples on their Ducati and Moto Guzzi motorcycles cruising along the high ridges on their way to a Sunday afternoon at Lake Garda. The flowers in the well-tended garden were just starting to explore the warm spring sunlight, and the streams were overflowing with snowmelt. Winter was past, and life was full of promise. In a moment the little Mercedes driven by my charm-ing translator Elena Micheli would collect me for the half-hour ride to Marcheno and the B.
