Editor's note: It is with great sadness that we note the passing of legendary outdoor writer Charles "Charley" F. Waterman, who died January 12 in Florida at the age of 91. He left behind his wife of 60 years, Debie, and countless readers who have enjoyed his incredible body of work. As a young boy growing up on a Kansas farm, Charley Waterman knew exactly what he wanted to be, but like many others, he found his career plans interrupted after college by the outbreak of World War II. Charley enlisted in the Navy and headed a crack combat photo team as a commissioned officer.
