A First Look at Shotstrings

A First Look at Shotstrings

Shotstringing is an important and of-ten confusing ballistic issue for many shotgunners. Surrounded by many myths and misunderstandings, shot-stringing remains an enigma, largely because there are virtually no photographs of shotstrings much farther than about 15 feet beyond the muzzle. (For a discussion of the difficulties in photographing shotstrings, see Letters, Sept/Oct '06.) Additionally, I find that much shotgunning literature (and shotgunning instruction) is replete with myriad misassumptions and miscalculations concerning bird flight speed, shotstring length, how fast shotstrings travel and, therefore, how many pellets in a given shotstring may actually intercept a bird crossing at an angle through it.
