Readers & Writers Adventures 2006
In this, the 12th year of our popular Readers & Writers Adventures program, we will be offering one excellent opportunity to come shooting with friends of Shooting Sportsman. Gun Review Editor Bruce Buck will host a dozen guests for three days of classic Southwest quail hunting at the Witcher Ranch, in Southeastern Colorado.
Santa Fe Trails Hunts manages 14,000 acres along the Cimarron River, and the phenomenal upland habitat includes eight miles of wooded river bottom-and plenty of birds. Guests, assisted by professional guides and top-quality pointing dogs, can expect to find 12 to 20 coveys a day of native bobwhite and blue, or scaled, quail.
The lodge's ranchlands, outside of Campo, share a boundary with Oklahoma and are a (long) stone's throw from Kansas, with easy fly-in access from Amarillo, Texas. The lodge and its grounds are part of the Witcher Ranch, operated by the third generation of the Witcher family. Hunters are served up a slice of authentic Southwest culture and history, with miles of productive rangeland to hunt, and cattle and bison wandering throughout the Santa Fe Trail.
Morning and afternoon hunts take place in new coverts each day, with shooters returning to the lodge for full lunches and chef-prepared dinners that include the most select cuts of beef and buffalo. Accommodations are in a new 6,000-square-foot lodge, replete with soaring ceilings and a crackling fire, and guests can relax over a game of billiards or a glass of cognac after dinner.
We will be arriving the afternoon of November 8, hunting for three days, and departing the morning of the 12th. The cost is $2,490, double occupancy.
