In March/April 1998, for the 10th-anniversary issue of Shooting Sportsman, I was asked to write a story about my favorite shotgun. To the surprise of the editors and many readers, my story was about a Model 12 Winchester pump. I had bought the nearly derelict gun (No. 2050) at a shop in Ketchikan, Alaska, in 1974 when I was commercial fishing in the region. Knowing then a lot less about guns than I do now, it had the magic ingredient: When I picked it up, it felt like I could "hit with it." And hit with it I did.
