Evolution of the Sidelock, Part I
Have you ever been curious about all of the little pins, or screws, on the outside of a sidelock? Why are they there and what are they attached to? Perhaps you've heard of a "seven-pin" or a "five-pin" sidelock and wondered about the difference between them. There are many variations and, although most contemporary sidelock guns use basically the same mechanisms developed in the late 1800s, certain locks-most notably some Spanish and Italian versions-have evolved markedly since then. I'll tell this story in three parts, with plenty of photos, nomenclature and explanation.
