Book Review

An Eclectic Collection

Here's a potpourri of books: a collection of sporting essays, a reference on British shotguns, a natural history of wildlife and a cookbook. Enjoy! The Tattered Autumn Sky By Tom Davis (Lyons Press, 800-243-0495; 2004) 270 pp. $23.95. This compilation of essays is subtitled "Bird Hunting in the Heartland," and it focuses on hunting for bobwhite quail, pheasants, prairie chickens, sharp-trailed grouse, ruffed grouse and woodcock in the Midwest. Davis, gundog columnist for Sporting Classics and a frequent contributor to SSM, describes hunts he has made during the past two decades in places as various as the Nebraska prairies, the alder tangles and popple forests of northern Wisconsin (Davis lives in Green Bay), and the fertile fields and brushlands of Iowa.
