The Major
Another Bear Story
By Galen Winter
Major Nathaniel Peabody (USA, ret.), returning from an October afternoon in the field, leaned his Lefever against the cabin and entered the doorway. Doc Carmichael was waiting for him. He had a water glass in his hand. Now it was only half-filled with drinking whisky. The doctor was wide-eyed and ashen colored and occasionally demonstrated what is meant by the phrase "involuntary shudder."
"What's up, Doc?" Peabody inquired. "You look like you've just seen a bear."
The Major was aware of Carmichael's inordinate fear of bears.
