Help a Grouse, Win a Parker

The Ruffed Grouse Society has organized a yearlong fundraising raffle to appeal to enthusiasts passionate about upland gamebirds and fine double guns: The chance to win one of the new $49,000 (Remington) Parker Guns for a $100 ticket. The limited number of 1,000 tickets doesn't offer the best odds, perhaps, but your chances of even obtaining one of these guns are slim. Your chances of obtaining one for less than the full asking price are slimmer still.

The 999 non-winners, of course, will be helping further the habitat-driven mission of RGS, the country's preeminent conservation group dedicated to increasing populations of ruffed grouse and woodcock. Michael Zagata, the recently named CEO and Executive Director of RGS, said the substantial prize will help raise awareness of the group, which celebrates its 45th anniversary this year. "To my knowledge," Zagata said, "it is the only one of these guns that is available. All of the others will be custom builds."

Remington exhibited early examples of its AAHE-grade Parker Guns at winter consumer and trade shows. This past December the company announced that Connecticut Shotgun Manufacturing Co. would produce a limited run of 10 to 12 of the 28-gauges in the first year of the model's reintroduction.

The high-grade American classic for the RGS raffle will be built with 28" barrels; a straight-grip, exhibition-grade stock; double triggers and a splinter forend. It will be embellished with a flushing grouse on one side of the receiver and a flushing woodcock on the other.

"There's certainly no better nexus than hunting ruffed grouse with a Parker 28-gauge," Zagata said.

The raffle kicked off in April at the annual banquet of the Greater Pittsburgh Area Chapter of the RGS. The prizewinner will be selected on the day of that chapter's banquet, on April 14, 2007. The winning ticket number will be the same as that selected in the Pennsylvania State Lottery's daily three-digit drawing.

Tickets will be available at all RGS banquets and events until the drawing, or contact The Ruffed Grouse Society, Inc., 888-564-6747; RGS@ruffedgrousesociety.org. More information is available in the "Society News" section of the RGS Website: www.ruffedgrousesociety.org.
