Metal Finishes for Fine Guns, Part II
In May/June I discussed the history and uses of metal finishes on quality firearms. This time I'll focus on my personal experiences preparing and applying metal finishes as well as look at their longevity. Whether refinishing older guns or preparing metal for new custom guns, all of the craftsmen I know hand-polish gunmetal instead of using wheel polishing. At one time wheel polishing was a job title in the trade, and there were professional polishers who, with a number of different wheels and compounds, could competently polish the many contours of firearms metalwork.
