Ground-Swatting
In October when the sun goes down in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the chill in the evening air is a warning of the all-too-soon appearance of gray skies, snow and the icy breath of winter. In October the pine and fir and spruce stolidly insist on retaining their green, but deciduous hardwoods dress up in yellows and reds and tamaracks turn orange. In October the coveys of ruffed grouse scatter, and men pick up shotguns and go into the woods to look for them. Major Nathaniel Peabody (USA, ret.) moved his campstool a few inches back from the fire.
