Rethinking reality-based "hunters' clays"
By Tred Slough
When I was first introduced to sporting clays, I was told that the game was designed to "re-create wingshooting situations encountered afield." Because the same thing was once said about skeet, I wasn't too surprised when it became obvious that sporting clays was hell-bent on following a similar path. As many have noted, it is a path that leads away from the hunting roots of both sports, and I've heard several serious sporting clays shooters say that a little backtracking is in order. Seriousness of that sort is contrary to my nature, but I do have a few thoughts on the subject.
