Book Review
Dog-Eared Reading
By Charles Fergus
The day before I wrote this, my friend Rick Flachbart and I hunted with my springer, Caillie, and then with Rick's setter, Winnie. It was fun watching the two dogs, with their contrasting styles. We didn't take home much game (total: one snipe), but we moved several birds and stopped more than once to admire the vivid colors of October in Vermont. But what really made the outing satisfying was the dogs. Without them, I doubt we would have gone afield.
This time I'll report on four books about hunting dogs: a collection of stories, two training guides and a heartfelt tribute to the canine partners that enrich our sport and our lives.
