Hunting Dogs

'Dog, Meet Birds'

I'm often asked, "At what age should a dog be introduced to birds?" My standard response is, "The earlier, the better." It is great to have purchased a kennel, a dog collar, some chew toys and so on before bringing a pup home, but because the objective is to develop a bird dog, live birds are necessary and integral ingredients in training. There's a strong argument to be made that if a new owner doesn't have access to training birds from the get-go, mistake No. 1 already has been committed. Assuming the new pup arrived when it was around eight weeks old, after two weeks of becoming confident with its new environment the dog should be properly introduced to birds.
