Shooting Stars
Time was when shooting was considered an admirable athletic feat and shooters were accorded as much respect and publicity as ballplayers are now. During the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, elaborate shooting parties at English country estates were all the rage. Besides the entertainment of masquerades and many-course meals, ladies customarily were invited into the field for at least one afternoon as spectators to watch the guns at work on driven birds. Lord Ripon, by acclamation the finest game shot in England, even set up his own estate so that the final drive of the day took place right in front of the manor house, where all his non-shooting guests could watch His Lordship demonstrate his famous skill with a gun.
